Exploring Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests

Two national forests in name, one in practice, the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests cover 2.76 million acres across east-central Arizona and into western New Mexico. The USDA Forest Service has managed them as a single unit since 1974, with the supervisory office in Springerville, Arizona. Apache National Forest was named for the Native American tribes of the region. Sitgreaves took its name from Captain Lorenzo Sitgreaves, a government topographical engineer who led the first scientific expedition across Arizona in the early 1850s. President Roosevelt originally proclaimed both forests in 1908.

The White Mountains and the Mogollon Rim

The forest stretches from Clifton in the east-central part of the state nearly 300 miles to the eastern boundary of Coconino National Forest. Elevations climb from around 3,500 feet on the Clifton Ranger District to nearly 11,500 feet at the summit of Mount Baldy. That dramatic range produces a striking shift in landscape, from lower-elevation pinyon pine to the ponderosa and spruce forests of the higher country.

The Mogollon Rim (pronounced "muggy-own") defines much of the Sitgreaves side of the forest. Running more than 200 miles from Flagstaff into western New Mexico, it tops out at roughly 7,600 feet. Views from its edge stretch far across the lower desert country to the south and west. The Coronado Trail Scenic Byway (US 191) covers 127 miles of winding road from Clifton to Springerville, rising from 3,500 to 9,000 feet along the way.

Hiking Apache-Sitgreaves

With more than 1,000 miles of trails, hiking Apache-Sitgreaves offers options for nearly every ability level. The Mogollon Rim Interpretive Trail is a flat, self-guided loop that works well for all skill levels and gives a clear sense of the rim's scale and character. Those looking for more demanding terrain will find trails that drop into forested canyons or climb well above the tree line.

The Escudilla Wilderness reaches its summit at 10,912 feet, where a fire lookout tower stands as the highest in the state. Mount Baldy, Arizona's second-highest peak, takes hikers through alpine meadows and into dense forest, though the true summit remains closed out of respect for its sacred significance to the White Mountain Apache Tribe. The Bear Wallow Wilderness includes an 8.2-mile route along a rocky creek bed through some of the most rugged terrain in the forest.

Big Lake Recreation Area

Big Lake Arizona sits high in the White Mountains at nearly 9,000 feet, entirely within the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. The lake covers roughly 450 acres and ranks among the top fishing destinations in the state. Fishing Apache-Sitgreaves draws anglers from across the region, and Big Lake is one of its most productive spots, known for strong populations of rainbow and cutthroat trout. The Big Lake Recreation Area includes five campgrounds ranging from full-hookup RV sites to tent-only walk-in spots along the shoreline. A marina with boat rentals and an on-site store make extended stays practical, and the surrounding terrain offers solid hiking and wildlife viewing throughout the warmer months.

Blue Range Primitive Area

The Blue Range Primitive Area holds a rare distinction as the last designated primitive area remaining in the entire National Forest System. Covering nearly 174,000 acres within the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, it sits along the edge of the Mogollon Rim where the Blue River valley cuts through the landscape. The terrain is demanding, with steep canyons and jagged ridgelines that make for challenging backcountry travel. No motorized or mechanized vehicles are permitted, including mountain bikes. Access is by foot or horseback only, and the area is managed under the same rules that govern congressionally designated wilderness, preserving a level of wildness that is genuinely rare in the Southwest.

Wildlife and Nature

The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests support more than 400 species of wildlife. Elk and black bears move through the high meadows throughout the year, and bald eagles nest near the forest's lakes and rivers. The forest also falls within the Blue Range Wolf Recovery Area, where Mexican gray wolves have been reintroduced as part of ongoing conservation work. The riparian corridors along the Blue River and other waterways attract strong concentrations of bird activity, making them a draw for birdwatchers at any experience level.

Planning a Visit

Springerville serves as the main gateway and is home to the forest's supervisory office. Summer is the peak season, offering cool temperatures at elevation as a natural contrast to the desert heat further south. Big Lake and most campgrounds open in late spring and remain accessible through fall. Winter brings cross-country skiing and ice fishing at various points throughout the forest. Fire restrictions change seasonally, so checking with the Springerville Ranger District before a trip is always a sound first step.
